This is an interesting subject. Tyler Perry, the very successful actor, producer, entrepreneur once stated “Focus on one thing.” How realistic is this? While spreading yourself too thin won’t allow any of your seeds to grow properly, putting all your eggs in one basket isn’t the most secure solution either. In school, we didn’t just learn one subject to ensure we are well-rounded and educated individuals. Also a farmer certainly doesn’t only have one crop on his farm. So what could Perry really mean by this?

Focusing all your energy towards a creative industry or new entrepreneurial venture means your often sacrificing financial security for your passion. Realistically, how will you survive if you put all your eggs in one basket? Especially if you have to take care of your family. If you’re lucky enough to be single in this type of situation, you still have to be able to feed yourself even if you’re homeless or housesitting. That said, you have to have a good balance because most people that have a new career every week are on the ‘get rich quick path’. Which is not sustainable nor realistic. And you end up with no growth in the end.

What is the balance?

Personally, I think it’s important to understand yourself and determine what your purpose/life goals are. While this rule can apply to some professions (surgeons and athletes), it doesn’t apply to all. Overall I have found that strategy and time management are the most important tools needed to ensuring overall growth. If a US President can oversee all 50 states and international affairs, while also launching and managing multiple initiatives, taking on daily press conferences and God knows what else that job entails, surely we can get our lives and businesses in order.

Creating a Strategy and Priorities

What are your priorities?

Depending on what your goals are, I have found that it’s best to create a life strategy that will keep you focused on achieving your life goals. This is what my life priority list looks like:

  1. Mental and Physical Health

  2. Financial Security

  3. Passion & Happiness

  4. Future

Your list is entirely up to you and can be applied to your entire life or the departments of your business.

Time Management and Time Blocking

All that strategizing means nothing if you don’t implement it. So get to business. Manage your day by time blocking to ensure you are fulfilling all your priorities. Lastly and most importantly, stick to it as much as possible!

Happiness, good health, success, these are all a journey, not a destination.

REMEMBER!
